Did Costco Just Change the Golf Ball Market?

Did Costco Just Change the Golf Ball Market?

Something strange happened at the beginning of 2017. A golf ball from Costco became the most sought-after ball in the market.

At $1.25 a ball the Kirkland signature undercuts pretty much every well-known brand out there, which in many markets would mean automatic success. But golf usually works differently. Golfers like brand names and they tend to associate higher prices with higher quality. Despite most middle to high handicap golfers not really being able to distinguish between different balls, they will undoubtedly reach for the more expensive equipment, believing it will make a difference to their game.

All of this makes the Kirkland Signature's sell out success surprising. And maybe even more surprising, eBay now features 2 pages of these bargain golf balls, priced at, in some cases, $85 for a dozen.

Maybe the Kirkland Signature shows us that there is a gap in the market for unknown brands, or maybe it was just a good bargain that we couldn't resist!
