How to Beat Slow Play in Golf?
Golf is slow, we’ve said it before and we’ll probably say it many more times. But who is to blame? Is it the beginner who takes 12 shots to get it to the green on the first hole? Or is it the weekly-medal player who thinks they must stare at their putt for five minutes in case it shaves off 0.1 from their handicap?
“...golf is supposed to be a sport. Part of sport is making decisions under time pressure.”
The Telegraph’s Mark Reason believes that it stems from the professionals and their painfully slow rounds which teach us to do the same. Time and time again, tour players dodge slow play penalties and still clock up five-hour plus rounds.
But would dishing out more time penalties on tour really help to change the game at the grass roots level, or are we destined to spend most of our Sunday afternoons waiting for the group in front to clear the green?
“Five-hour rounds are not fun for anybody, for media, for TV, for us, for anybody.”
